Loyola University Chicago health sciences students, faculty and staff participated in a poverty simulation workshop Thursday at St. Eulalia Church, in Maywood, Ill. Activities included standing in an unemployment line, role-playing as poor patients and serving an inexpensive healthy lunch . . .

The Newtown, Conn., school shooting has sparked national discussions on gun control and mental health. Whether the shooter was mentally insane, the embodiment of evil, or both, is debatable.

Meanwhile, fiscal cliff talks between President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner continue, and long-term Medicaid cuts are on the bargaining table . . .
