Ruby Dee died on Wednesday in her New Rochelle, New York, home surrounded by family. She was born to Marshall Edward Nathaniel Wallace, a cook, porter and waiter and Gladys Hightower, on Oct. 27, 1922, in Cleveland, Ohio. She was later raised by her father and stepmother, Emma Amelia Benson, a teacher, after Hightower left the family.
