Mom decries middle-school cotton-picking assignment

A mother was outraged when her daughter was asked to pick cotton for a class assignment at Redmond Middle School, in Redmond, Wash.

Carolyn Walker said the students were given a cotton plant last Friday and asked to pick it so they could “see what it was like to be a slave.” She added, “My daughter is African American and for her to pick cotton when her grandparents were raised on a plantation to pick cotton, is not OK, it’s not OK at all” . . .
