Philadelphia man’s death sentence ‘miscarriage of justice,’ says US District judge

James “Jimmy” Dennis has been on death row since 1992. US District Judge Anita Brody ruled he must be retried within six months or freed.

US District Judge Anita Brody has awarded a new trial Wednesday for James “Jimmy” Dennis, a Philadelphia man sentenced to death in 1992, for killing a high school student for her gold earrings. Brody said, “The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has committed a grave miscarriage of justice.”

Brody found Dennis’ conviction was based on questionable eyewitness testimony inferior police work and a poor defense by his attorney, per a UPI report . . .
